It’s now official announcement that Manny Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) and Keith Thurman (29-0, 22 KOs) will be fighting at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was already announced, but the venue wasn’t official until today. The fight will be shown on Fox Sports pay-per-view.
After months of speculation that eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, who holds the WBA’s secondary welterweight title, would look to unify with full WBA titleholder Keith Thurman, the Filipino icon tweeted out Saturday that the fight is on.
The MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas has hosted some of the most exciting fights over the years. It’s chosen as the venue for most big showdowns. The next major event in MMA is set to take place in July with Manny Pacquaio vs. Keith Thurman.
Today welterweights Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman held their kick-off press conference, formally announcing their July 20th fight on FOX PPV. The presser streamed live, but can be watched in its entirety in the video above.
According to the tweet, the fight will take place on Fox PPV, although no site has been announced as of yet. Fox’s broadcast of Jarrett Hurd vs. Julian Williams later confirmed the bout.
The challenge for the WBA World Welterweight Championship was issued by the Regular WBA Welterweight Champion Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao, and Thurman accepted. In the boxing world, Pacquiao holds a prominent position being the only eight-division world champion. His fellow fighters commend him for being the best out there. So it was natural that Thurman would take this as a chance to solidify his boxing career by beating a boxing legend.
Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) enters this off a dominant performance over Adrien Broner at the top of the year. During today’s presser Pacquiao reaffirmed that he’ll continue with his boxing journey while Thurman (29-0, 22 KOs) told the fans and media that this will be Pacquiao’s last fight.
Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs), who turned 40 in January, has seemingly turned back the clock over the past year with a stoppage of Lucas Matthysse that ended a nine-year gap between knockouts and a dominant decision win over Adrien Broner in January.
And he’s determined to do just that. Despite having massive respect for the 40-year old Filipino, Thurman believes the upcoming fight will be the last appearance of him.
Thurman stepped to the podium first to speak his piece, saying he is very grateful for the opportunity to share the ring with a legend like Pacquiao. That said, Thurman says ‘times change’ and that this is a new era in boxing so he plans on putting Pacquiao out to pasture.
A full-time senator in his native Philippines, Pacquiao appears to be a different fighter from the one who was beaten to the punch repeatedly in a 2017 disputed decision loss to Jeff Horn in Australia that saw Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach suggest retirement.
Pacquiao’s last encounter in the ring was against Adrien Broner in January – a fight which he won. Similarly, Thurman earned a win against Josesito Lopez in January. Both champions have had plenty of time to recover and train since then. Catch the exciting Manny Pacquiao vs Keith Thurman on FireStick with this guide.
“Floyd’s gone. Pacquiao’s here. Come July 20th, he will disappear” Thurman said of his opponent. “He announced him as a senator, he belongs as a senator — in the Philippines. With all respect, he’s a legend, he’ll always be remembered in the sport, but I’m doing a Manny Pacquiao — what he did to Oscar De La Hoya.”
The fight against Thurman (29-0, 22 KOs) is expected to be a pick ’em, mostly because the 30-year-old slugger, nicknamed “One Time,” looked sluggish in January when he returned from a two-year layoff due to separate injuries to outpoint Josesito Lopez.
Then when Pacquiao had his turn to speak — well, you know Pacquiao — he gave his typical spiel that you’ve heard many times over. But when Brian Custer brought up Keith Thurman’s trash talk, saying that he’s going to put Pacquiao to bed when they fight, Pacquiao responded by saying this:
Thurman, who was stripped of his WBC title during his absence, retained his WBA belt and will look for his sixth title defense.
“I’m a kind of fighter that I don’t talk too much, no trash talk, but I do it in the ring — a lot of things. Because he say that, let’s prove it in the ring on July 20th. And you will see a warrior Manny Pacquiao in the ring this July 20th. Because of all he says, let’s prove it in the 20th and I will show you how it is like to be in the ring with me on July 20th. That’s a guarantee.”
